Do you have a Patriot ancestor? Since 1890, women across the United States have been honoring the dedication and sacrifice of the Patriots who fought for American independence by joining DAR. Today’s DAR is full of professional, community-minded, and motivated women who carry on the independent spirit of their ancestors.

To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older and be a direct descendant of an ancestor who aided in the cause for American independence. Any woman who can trace their direct lineage may join, no matter what race, ethnicity, or religion.

Why join DAR? Make life-long friends, feel connected to your family, serve your community, and have fun!

If someone in your family was or is a member of DAR, you may use her application as a starting point. Some additional research may be needed to fill in any gaps.

District of Columbia DAR regularly holds membership workshops at the DAR Library. Our chapter is also happy to help you get started and answer any questions you have. Please email our registrar to find out how to begin your research and prepare your application. We’ll be there to guide you through the process, answer any questions, and advise on any issues that may arise.
