Who We Are

Each member of the Mary Desha Chapter brings her own unique interests, experiences, and personality to the mix. We’re a diverse group who always manage to make each other laugh while serving the community and exploring the region.

Take a look and find out more about the kind of women who make our chapter so special!

Our Namesake

Mary Desha was one of the four founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1890.

She was born in Lexington, Kentucky and originally became a teacher. Mary Desha was one of the first women to travel to Alaska to be an educator. Her letters of protest to the government about what she deemed the unfit living conditions of the indigenous population of Alaska resulted in a federal investigation.

She eventually moved to Washington, D.C. and spent the rest of her life as a civil servant for the U.S. government. In addition, she became the Assistant Director of the DAR Hospital Corps of nurses during the Spanish-American War.

Her work ethic and dedication were legendary, and when she passed away in 1911 she was honored with the first memorial service ever held in Memorial Continental Hall.
